Thimphu, Bhutan – 31 July 2024 – Bhutan proudly joined the global community in celebrating World Ranger Day, an annual event dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who are the guardians of our natural heritage. This day recognizes the invaluable contributions of rangers in protecting wildlife, preserving ecosystems, and promoting conservation efforts across the nation. Further, this special occasion allows us to reflect on and appreciate the incredible contributions of rangers worldwide who dedicate their lives to protecting our natural heritage.
The Department of Forests and Park Services organized the celebration in the Capital city of Thimphu with the global theme ” 30 By 30, which highlights the need to protect 30% of the land and water by 2030 as per the Kunming- Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework emphasizing the crucial role of rangers in achieving this global target. The day also highlighted the Royal Government of Bhutan’s commitment to strengthen our conservation efforts and support our rangers in every possible way to achieve this global goal.
The Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Lyonpo Gem Tshering graced the celebration as the chief guest. The ministers for the Ministry of Education and Skill Development and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the Secretary of the MoENR, heads, and representatives of the conservation partner organization, senior government officials of the MoENR, Ex-foresters and the staff of the Department of Forests and Park Services were present for the celebration.
As a part of the celebration, several scientific publications of the Department were launched. The National Red Panda survey revealed 302 individuals across the sampled areas in Bhutan. The survey aimed to understand the abundance and genetic health of Bhutan’s red panda population, using non-invasive genetic tools. The findings from the survey underscore the importance of continued conservation efforts to ensure the long-term survival of red pandas in Bhutan. Additionally, the event also highlighted the launch of carbon accounting in Protected Areas, demonstrating Bhutan’s dedication to combating climate change through effective forest management. The release of the e-DNA report marked a significant milestone in utilizing advanced technology for species monitoring, enhancing biodiversity conservation efforts. The event also featured the presentation of the annual Biodiversity Monitoring Report, showcasing the nation’s progress in preserving its rich natural heritage. These accomplishments reflect Bhutan’s integrated approach to conservation, blending traditional stewardship with innovative practices.
Besides Thimphu, the day was also celebrated in all the field offices of the Department of Forests and Park Services. The celebration throughout the country was generously supported by BFL, WWF Bhutan, RSPN, BTFEC, Bhutan Foundation and Bhutan Ecological Society. The DoFPS extends our heartfelt gratitude to all our conservation partners for their unwavering support and the invaluable partnership which is a testament to their commitment to environmental conservation and the welfare of our rangers.
