The Mongol Ecology Center, a non-governmental organization based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Tucson, Arizona donated 15 motorcycles to the Department of Forests and Park Services. The bikes are handed over to the Rangers in both protected areas and territorial divisions to help resolve mobility issue and enhance the patrolling efforts.
Our rangers carry out patrolling in remote and inaccessible areas in order to curb the illegal timber smuggling, wildlife poaching and other unlawful forestry activities. In doing so, they have to travel long distances. With the bikes, it will ease travel and be able to venture into areas where vehicles cannot go, especially in the rough and unpaved roads.
In addition, our rangers will be able to respond quickly to human-wildlife conflicts besides providing faster services to the general public. From among 15, three bikes were handed over to Divisional Forest Office in Sarpang.
One recipient of the bike is Pema Rinchen, a ranger in Sarpang Divisional Forest Office. He shared that the bike will be of great help in carrying out patrolling and providing better public services. “We don’t have to wait for means of mobility. With bikes, we can instantly respond to the public services”, he said.
Lhapchu Tshering, another ranger from Sarpang supplemented that the bikes will not only help carryout patrolling more efficiently but it will also help him in providing better public services.
Sarpang, is one of the human-wildlife conflict hotspot. Rangers have to respond to public’s plea for intervention when elephants maraud their crops for properties. Therefore, the bikes will help to respond instantly for such issues.
The bikes were donated as part of project – Rally for Rangers by Mongol Ecology Center.
