Stakeholder consultation meeting conducted on GTCT

Consultation meeting with local communities

The Department of Forests and Park Services led by the office of Bhutan Tiger Center (BTC) is currently conducting stakeholder consultation meetings involving local government and communities of Nubi and Tangsibji Gewogs under Trongsa Dzongkhag for review of the Bylaw developed for the establishment of Gewog Tiger Conservation Tshogpa (GTCT) and Tiger Quick Response Team (TQRT).The GTCT is an integrated site-based approach to provide an appropriate compensation mechanism to minimize financial losses against livestock killed by tigers. It also aims to promote decentralized local governance and community ownership to resolve and manage human-tiger conflict at the grassroots. Based on the severity of Human-Tiger Conflicts (HTC) reported especially from central Bhutan, the Department shall be establishing GTCTs and TQRTs in nine Gewogs spanning six Dzongkhags. The Department shall also train the GTCT and TQRT members to report on HTC cases using Standard Reporting System and Standard Operating Procedure for dealing with livestock depredations and HTC emergencies.

The Department remains committed to ensuring a holistic and integrative approach to mitigating HTC through the strengthening of community stewardship and local institutional capacity to act on HTC events efficiently and to ensure the long-term persistence of tigers and their coexistence with communities.
The program is supported by the UNDP GEF-LDCF (NAPA-III Bhutan project) and the UNEP.
