
It is expected that more will follow in the coming days, soon filling up the Phobjikha valley with colossal and reverberating echo of their sweet calls. Last year, a total of 599 Black-Necked Cranes spent their winter in the country which is usually for four months – from November to February.
In Bhutan, BNC winter in places such as Phobjikha, Khotokha , Bumdeling and Bumthang. Phobjikha, located at an altitude of 3000 metres above sea level is known to host maximum birds. Coinciding with arrival of BNC in Phobjikha RSPN also holds Annual Black-necked Crane festival in the compound of Gangtey Goenpa. The main feature of the festival is the Crane Dance performed by school students. This year, the festival is scheduled to be held on November 11, 2022.
