The Department of Forests and Park Services (DoFPS) in Collaboration with the Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) is conducting training on the operation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) commonly known as drones. The training is being offered at the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environmental Research in Bumthang from 20–24 June 2022 by the trainers from DoFPS and BCAA. A total of 42 participants including 37 foresters, four from the Department of Agriculture, and one from WWF Bhutan are taking part in the training.
The five days intensive training will capacitate the participants with basic knowledge and skills required to fly a drone safely, ethically and responsibly. Besides learning about the technical nuances of operating a drone and post processing of the acquired data, the participants will also be made aware of the existing drone regulations and permitting procedures. At the end of the training, each participant will be assessed and certified based on the results of the proficiency test.
The DoFPS plans to use drone technology in enhancing and strengthening forestry services such as mapping and assessment of forest resources, monitoring of wildlife, mitigation of human wildlife conflict and combating forest fires.
The training is funded by the Bhutan for Life Program.
